Su Tomesen
Friend of the Collective
1970
Dutch visual artist based in Amsterdam and Jogjakarta, making films, videos, photographs and installations. In 2007 she got her MA in Fine Art at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. Her background –educated as historian and working as director for television– is integrated in her work. Her work evolves from researching local circumstances, observing situations and she has a strong eye for small events. In her work she’s paving a new meaning for the idea that art is life and life is art.
Su Tomesen has traveled widely and many of her works are made during artist residencies across the globe, like in Amman, Johannesburg and recently in Medellín. She also worked for the international video project City One Minutes in Port-au-Prince, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. Works and experiences from abroad she brings to the Netherlands and vice versa: “Sometimes I feel like an ambassador, I show works from Johannesburg in Yerevan or I present a video produced in Cuba in Jogjakarta”.
Su Tomesen has had solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions, including Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem, Casa Tres Patios Medellín, &Foam Amsterdam, EYE Filminstitute Amsterdam, Toronto Urban Film Festival, CBK Zuidoost Amsterdam, Erasmushuis Jakarta, Langgeng Art Foundation Jogjakarta.
Next to her work as an artist she teaches video workshops for Unicef and The One Minutes Foundation
