Remy Jungerman
Friend of the Collective
Remy Jungerman (Moengo, 1959) is a Surinamese artist, mostly working in Netherlands.
Remy Jungerman followed from 1985 to 1989 the Higher Academy of Arts and Cultural Education in Paramaribo and studied sculpture from 1990, when he settled in the Netherlands, until 1993 at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam.
Jungerman initially painted in an abstract painting, surrealistic style that was sometimes reminiscent of Joan Miró. The faces of the pictured individuals showed mask-like drawing and color was exuberant. Later, Jungerman focused more on plants, built from various materials, which often investigate the colonial past. In his new work he shows how people from different cultures try to make themselves understood.
Remy Jungerman had solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions, including the Biennial of Havana, Cuba, Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam, New York Brooklyn Museum, Stedelijk Museum Aalst Belgium, Musée Art Contemporain Lyon France, Palacio de Congresos, Recife Brazil, National Museum, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Stedlijk Museum, Amsterdam.
